HOW NOT TO BE A ROCKSTAR!

Updated: Feb 6

By: Music Mukbang Dad

This week I was writing an article about “Top 20 things new artists should know”, I was sidetracked when listening and looking at social media of some “upcoming musicians”. I realized then, it’s urgent that I say the quiet part out loud for those new artists that really don’t have a clue.

FIND YOUR INNER CANADIAN.

When talking to fans, other musicians, management and on social media in general, keep it professional! Remember your boundaries, nothing screams “noob” like a 3:am DM saying “Hey check out our new jazz fusion remix of Freebird!”

It should also go without saying people in real life aren’t your buddies on Minecraft. You shouldn’t use the same type of language. Violent threats like”hey play this sick mix or I’m gonna beat your ass!" are a guarantee your music will not be played and you may enjoy a visit from the cops.

NOT EVERYONE CAN BE SARA MCLACHLAN !

Everyone wants to help a cause they believe in, however for new musicians without “media training" it is a minefield!

If the cause is anything other than saving puppies, donate or support those things privately.

YOUR FAVORITE ARTIST IS NOT R.KELLY!

This comes back to “media training"

Read the room! Even if I love Kid Rock you will never know. It’s nice to shout out your inspirations but it doesn’t have to be a wall new fans will need to climb to find out more about you. Pick your second best inspiration or someone everyone loves like DOLLY or Stevie Wonder.

LASTLY…YOU ARE NOT KEITH RICHARDS!

Lots of musicians take the edge off of performing with drugs and alcohol, but I don’t want you to become another cliche. I’m not your mom or a licensed professional, however here are some resources I hope you never need!

MusiCares offers Help with Mental Health and Addiction Recovery.
